Tommy Papanier, a co-defendant in the trial of accused racketeer Carl
Coppola, took the witness stand Thursday and disputed previous testimony that he
was connected to New York's Gambino organized crime family.
The testimony of Papanier, a tall, strapping man with a thick New York
accent, and his wife, Margaret, contained several references to his devout
Christian beliefs. Ten
members of his Norcross church lined the courtroom benches, and his attorney,
Alan Begner, unsuccessfully sought permission for Papanier to hold his Bible
while on the witness stand. Papanier also denied previous
testimony that he conspired to distribute cocaine with Coppola and hosted a
series of meetings at his Dunwoody home during which the murder of an associate
was planned.

"The
government could not claim complete victory, however. Of Coppola's three
co-defendants, one, Frank Church, was convicted and two were acquitted. Those
acquitted were Darrell Brown and Coppola's former bodyguard, Tommy Papanier,
who witnesses had linked to a New York organized crime family.....
....`I
had the Lord on my side'...
.Papanier
let out a loud sigh of relief and buried his face in his hands when his
verdict was read. Outside the courtroom later, as he embraced his wife,
Margaret, Papanier was asked why the jury convicted Coppola but not
him. "All
I can say is I had the Lord on my side," he said tearfully.
"I
prayed for this," added Papanier, whose fellow church members attended
portions of the trial. "At 4 a.m. I was woken up in my cell and the Lord
laid it out for me to pack my stuff."
Papanier had
faced three racketeering and cocaine-distribution charges. Prosecution
witnesses testified that he participated in murder plots against two of
Coppola's associates, helped Coppola plan a cocaine-distribution network and
bragged about his links to New York's Gambino syndicate. Papanier
disputed their testimony.
His attorney,
Alan Begner, said the government failed to prove charges in the indictment and
instead "sought to put on evidence of such things
as possible Gambino connections, things I did not think were
relevant to the case."

-->TOM'S TESTIMONY 1996-2000
"When I was seventeen years old, they came to me, and they gave me a
gun. This time it wasn't an old gun. It wasn't rusty, and this time it had
bullets in it. And I took a vow that I would live and die by that gun. A piece
of paper was put in my hand. It was set on fire. They said that if I betray the
Mafia, I would burn like this paper was burning and go to hell."
and this
"It wasn't long before that I was called to use the gun. They called me
in. And they said, "Tom, you've been doing very good. You're making a lot
of money for yourself. You're making a lot of money for us." And I was
always big and strong and knew how to take care of myself. I was a fighter. And
they used to send me out to collect money. I was seventeen and eighteen years
old, and they would send me out to grown men to collect money they owed. And I
always came back with every penny. I was very proud of it. If I had to beat them
up with a baseball bat or stab them with an ice pick, whatever I had to do,
short of killing them, I would do to bring the money back. And I was very proud
of this. I was growing in the Mafia. I was getting a reputation. And they said,
"Now, is the next step. Some men have hijacked a truck in the Garment
District. It was an inside job. We killed the man on the inside. That's already
taken care of. But, the two men that hijacked the truck, they're hiding out in
Kansas. We want you to go there. We want you to shoot both of these men. We
don't want you to kill them. We just want you to set an example for everybody to
see what happens if they should steal from us." And they said, "We
don't want you using your right name. So, we have some identification for you.
Here's the plane ticket. Just go there. Soon as you get off the plane, somebody
knows who you are. They'll come to you. They'll give you keys to the car, and
they'll give you a gun. And they'll give you pictures of the two men that we
want to shoot. And they'll tell you exactly where they are. Just go there. Shoot
the two men and come right back." Everything that they told me was exactly
the way they told me. When I got there, a man met me. He gave me the keys. He
gave me the gun. He gave me pictures. He gave me directions. I went there. I
shot the two men. I came back to the airport. Kept looking in the rear view
mirrors. Nobody was following me. I made a few extra turns. Felt very safe. Got
back to the airport. Waited until they were boarding the plane. And I got on the
plane. And all that was on the plane was policemen. And as soon I boarded the
plane, they said my name. They put handcuffs on me. Telling me I was under
arrest for shooting two men. And they even knew the names of the two men. I
didn't even know their names. I only had their picture. Brought me before a
judge. And the judge said, "You know, you're Italian. You're from New York.
And you're down here shooting people. Are you in the Mafia? Is this a
contract?" And I had taken a vow of silence at seventeen years old, and I
didn't even answer the judge. And he said, "If you're going to be quiet
like this when you come before me for the trial," he said, "I'll send
you away for the maximum time that I can." When it came time for me to go
before the judge, I still kept that vow of silence. I didn't say a word. He
sentenced me to two 5 to 10 year sentences in the Kansas State Penitentiary.

This is written word for word from a letter sent from a very special and well respected minister who was *REBUKED in
many ways and made to feel WRONG for nearly THREE YEARS for simply sending this
letter and attending a meeting with Mr. Fisher where this situation was
discussed. In fact, it has been told to EZnewsTV that the
answer to this letter at that meeting was "We cannot do anything, we may be held
liable" and that VICTORY of VINDICATION!
Yes NO ONE did anything but make the The Messenger the scape-goat and allowed
this fraud to continue.
AND Papania IS STILL IS SELLING HIS
STORY.!
NOTICE THE DATE of November,
1997.

| "A person, a city. a nation will not be changed by timid
methods." So says Mr. Thomas Papania, yet we cannot see the Christian Nature of
this man... just look at the facts, since becoming a Christian, he has treated
Divorce and Contempt as his partner! Tom was married and divorced before he
became a Christian, and so was many a Christian, but after? AND then claim a
Great Paul The Apostle Image? Imagine, its one thing what someone does BEFORE he
becomes a Christian and a Major Role Model, but after? How can one call
themselves a Role Model brought to you by God when he seems to continue to do as
he did for the 39 years before?
Our
opportunity to get these records show a divorce still pending - rumor has it
that he is ready to marry again? But the records show, at least in 2000, that
the last divorce is still pending, so, patty, we will check the facts next week
.. so just hold on..
See, you are paying for divorces through his legal fees,
no??

| Karjala vs.
Papania |
Shortly after going public with my exposé
revealing the unwise decision on the part of Focus on the Family to promote a
man by the name of Tom Papania I received two e-mails from someone objecting to
the report. Who objected? Tom Papania!
The two e-mails I was sent are
from an AOL account bearing Tom's name (those of you who are subscribed to the
AOL service can view Tom's profile using the AOL Member Directory). The
official e-mail contact information for Tom's ministry "God's Saving Grace" is
also an AOL account ("GSGMinistries@aol.com"). I believe the e-mails sent to me
are real and I will keep them on file to forward to others if there are ever
requests made for me to prove the authenticity of the letters.
These two
letters reveal the actions of a desperate man who has been backed into a
corner. My responses to the letters were written on the same day each of them
was received:

| Evidence of Evangelistic Apostasy |
For millions of supporters of Focus on the
Family, including the large constituencies of Evangelical, Catholic and
Charismatic believers the notion that there are catastrophic problems within a
ministry they have been led to believe is helping to strengthen the family unit
and spread the Gospel is hard for them to grasp. As a former employee and
supporter of this ministry I too at one time firmly believed that Focus on the
Family was a God-ordained vehicle of truth and deliverance. But the evidence I
have uncovered in recent years speaks more of lies and damaged lives then it
does of truth and deliverance.
There is some excellent information
available through the Internet regarding the corruption that is tolerated and
practiced by the governing body at Focus on the Family. My purpose in this
writing is to inform concerned Christians of this credible information by
linking them to these articles (written from Christian perspectives). But
before I do that I would like to comment on some very problematic issues that
are receiving little or no attention from any other sources.
The first issue I would like to address
concerns a Focus on the Family radio program that aired nationwide in December
of 1996. It featured the story of Tom Papania and was made available to the
Focus constituency via an audio cassette tape titled "From Mafia to Ministry"
for the suggested donation of $7. On the tape Mr. Papania shares a story where
he makes the claim that he was a member of a New York crime family before
becoming a Christian. The story is related about how one man was transformed
from a violent thug into a minister of the Gospel. It was an incredibly popular
tape and in early 1997 became the #1 requested broadcast in Focus history and
launched Mr. Papania into a very successful career as an international speaker.
Multiple thousands of copies of this tape were sent out to callers and writers
to the ministry who asked for it. I processed quite a few orders myself for
this particular item. The problem? It was later discovered that Tom Papania is
a fraud. |
